Improving your vocabulary

Vocabulary is an essential part of communication, through vocabulary learners can have access to knowledge, and have better understanding of the class thematic, for that reason, it is crucial to teach learners the appropriate vocabulary for the subject; so, I am going to emphasis in breadth vocabulary because it has a connection with Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICs) and Cognitive academic language proficiency (CALPs), therefore, in these activities I am going to implement (CALPs) hence, I designed four activities in order to improve my students vocabulary in the field of science. Moreover in this blog I am going to promote the vocabulary necessary for my learners, firstly it is very important to activate prior knowledge and elicit students with the implementation of complementary activities that support the unit, then I created all the activities in a page called “educaplay”, which is a free page where teachers can create online and printable activities for students, I decided to use this online page because activities can be dynamics and created by the teacher, the three activities were created by me. In addition, the first activity implemented in the blog is short video with basic vocabulary about the environment such as air, water, soil, nature, and so forth, this activity was thought in activate learners prior knowledge, they have to watch the video and answer some questions, moreover, as Llinares, Morton and Whittaker (2012) argue that learners have to improve and expand their discourse in order to have a good performance in the language. Environment vocabulary Language discourse is a key element of the learning process; the use of an accurate speech will define how learners are going to understand the message given by the teacher; consequently, a formal register is neither informal nor personal, this means that a teacher must use academic language, which is a standard language understandable for everybody, in the words of Halliday (1978) a “register is determined by what is taking place, who is taking part, and what part the language is playing” (p. 23). In this respect, I as a teacher I have to promote academic language in order to allow my students to communicate effectively according to the place they are. the second activity for improving students vocabulary is a short activity where students have to read a sentence and they have to write the definition of the sentence. Complete the third activity is a crossword, which is an activity that let students think. crossword FINAL TASK The final activity was thought in the practice of the vocabulary worked before, learners have to search information about ways of protecting the soil from erosion, then students have to create a short video of 3 minutes long, where they have to explain the different ways of protecting the soil from erosion, learners have to upload the video in youtube, and then, they have to put the link of video in the sections of comments in the blog.
